The Story Behind Irwin Landscaping

Irwin Landscaping has been built on decades of experience, a love for the outdoors, and a passion for creating spaces that homeowners can truly enjoy.

The company’s roots go back to a background in landscape architecture. After earning a degree from the University of Georgia, the founder returned to Delaware and began working with a landscape firm that handled design work and commercial landscape projects. When the owner of that company decided it was time to sell, he stepped into ownership and began helping grow the business with more residential design work, along with select commercial projects.

Eventually, he started his own company: Irwin Landscaping. That was approximately 38 years ago.

Since then, Irwin Landscaping has focused heavily on residential projects, working closely with homeowners to understand what they want from their outdoor spaces. For some, that means a patio where they can relax or entertain. For others, it means an outdoor kitchen, a cooking area, a simplified garden, or a landscape that is easier to maintain.

At the heart of the work is the relationship with each homeowner. Every property is different, and every client has their own vision for how they want to use their yard. Irwin Landscaping helps turn those ideas into outdoor spaces that feel natural, functional, and personal.

The company has continued to grow, especially with Matt joining the team. His interest in landscaping began early, even in high school, when he spent time taking care of people’s gardens and discovered how much he enjoyed working outside.

That interest grew into a deeper appreciation for landscape architecture, plant varieties, and the way land can be shaped to create something unique. From the layout of the ground to the selection of plants, every detail plays a role in how a finished landscape feels and functions.

For the Irwin Landscaping team, one of the most rewarding parts of the work comes after a project is complete. Seeing homeowners outside enjoying their new space, whether they are sitting with a sandwich and iced tea or relaxing with a drink, is what makes the work meaningful.
