Steep Backyard Retaining Wall Transformation

A steep backyard can be difficult to use, especially when the land drops off right behind the house. For this Irwin Landscaping project, the property had a large hill behind the back door that limited how the homeowners could enjoy the space.

To solve the problem, the team built a double set of retaining walls with a planting area in between. This helped manage the change in elevation while also creating a more finished and attractive landscape. What was once a steep drop-off became a large, flat, open area that could be used and enjoyed much more easily.

The natural stone retaining walls were designed to work with the different elevations from the house. Instead of making the backyard feel broken up or difficult to access, the walls helped shape the space and give it structure.

Planting between the retaining walls added softness and visual interest. This detail helps the stonework feel more connected to the rest of the landscape while creating a more natural transition between levels.

Another important feature of the project is the under-cap lighting. Lighting was installed along the walls so the entire space is illuminated at night. This makes the backyard more enjoyable in the evening and also creates a beautiful view from the road.
